Majdal Shams Village Hit by Rocket from Lebanon

MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights - A rocket from Lebanon struck a soccer field on Saturday in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, killing at least 10 people, including children, according to Israeli and Lebanese media reports.

The strike occurred in the village of Majdal Shams, which is located in the southern foothills of Mount Hermon and is known as the informal capital of the Golan Heights.

The Golan Heights, a strategic plateau, was captured by Israel from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and has been occupied by Israel ever since. The international community considers the Golan Heights to be part of Syria, and its annexation by Israel is not recognized by most countries.

The rocket attack on Saturday is the deadliest in the Golan Heights in years. It comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon, which have a long history of conflict.

The Lebanese army said in a statement that it was investigating the incident and that it had not fired any rockets into Israel.
